Today we will tell you today is national what day. Human rights education is much more than a topic of lesson or the theme of a International Day of Human Rights: it is a process that seeks to equip everyone to live their lives in safety and dignity. On this International Day of Human Rights, let us continue together to ensure that future generations have a culture of human rights, and to promote freedom, security and peace in all countries.
International Day of Human Rights December 10
Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the UN
In 1950, the United Nations General Assembly invited all States and international organizations concerned to celebrate Human Rights Day on 10 December each year (resolution 423 (V)). This day marks the anniversary of the Assembly’s adoption in 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A cornerstone of international law
This text, which in 1948 was a mere non-binding declaration, signed by 58 United Nations Member States constituting the United Nations General Assembly at that time, became – following the atrocities of the Second World War – the cornerstone of international human rights law.
